The first country to speak English was, of course, England.
But there were no English people in England before the year 450 A.C. (After Christ).
Before the year 450 (four hundred and fifty) the inhabitants of the island were the Celts, a native tribe, and the Romans, who invaded the island in the first century B.C. (Before Christ). The island was called Britain.
When the Romans left the island (400 A.C.) some Barbarians invaded it. These Barbarians were the Angles and the Saxons.
From the name Angle we have English for the people and England for the country.
